About the podcast
Dr Lauren Weekes, consultant in Anaesthesia and Prehospital Emergency Medicine, provides the expert input on this podcast discussing rapid sequence induction in the setting of traumatic injury.
Lauren takes us through indications for performing an RSI, drug choice (anaesthetic agents and cardiovascular support) and how a patient’s injuries may influence this. She underlines the importance of appreciating the physiological effects of intubation and anticipating these when preparing for intubation.
Intubation in the ED is not uncommon. Whether performing or assisting with the procedure, an understanding of the elements that go into the decision making and execution of this is key to helping it run smoothly and safely for the team and the patient.
To cover the level 1 and 2 compotencies, you will need to demonstrate you can assist with an RSI and document this in your log book. This podcast is useful additional material only.
Trauma RSI – ThePTN podcast
This podcast is not mandatory for the level 1 and 2 requirements but it may help with the following learning areas:
Clinical assessment and airway management:
- Is competent to assist with a rapid sequence induction (RSI) and care of the intubated and ventilated trauma patient (where available)
utilising a safety checklist - The nurse/AHP must be able to demonstrate the indications for RSI and is able to check and set up equipment appropriately and has an awareness of drugs required for RSI
- Understands the indication for front of neck access procedures such as a surgical cricothyroidotomy. Is aware the location of equipment required and is aware of their role if this procedure is required
